The Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists

The Purves Environmental Fund (PEF) is a major sponsor of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, providing core funding to cover its operational and management costs. The PEF also supported the formalisation of the Group in 2005/06. The Group is made up of independent eminent Australian scientists, economists, and business people, who contribute their time, expertise, and reputations to develop public policy reforms. The Wentworth Group was formed in 2002 with the objective to connect science to public policy to improve the management of Australia’s land and water resources and the conservation of Australia’s biodiversity.

The Wentworth Group has a proven track record since 2002 of influencing legislative reform to improve environmental outcomes. It promotes science-based solutions to achieve the following outcomes:

• Water – Sound policy underpinned by robust science to maintain the health of Australian rivers, wetlands and people;

• Land – A healthy landscape that supports rural communities and allows life in the unique Australian bush to flourish; and

• Biodiversity – Stewardship of the Australian environment to conserve its rich and diverse species of flora and fauna.
