Container Deposit Scheme Campaign

The Purves Environmental Fund (PEF) was the cornerstone funder of Boomerang Alliance’s campaign to introduce a container deposit scheme to solve drink container litter issue. Boomerang Alliance is one of the peak organisations working to create a healthy pollution free environment by promoting maximum resource efficiency and zero waste.

The campaign achieved a historic win in May 2016 when the NSW Premier announced introduction of a full container deposit scheme. Since then ACT, Queensland and Western Australia followed the suite and have launched its own state-based scheme. Once these jurisdictions decided to adopt the scheme, Boomerang Alliance continued to work with each government with respective scheme design and implementation to ensure the new scheme would deliver multiple environmental and social benefits. The Alliance also continued to advocate for its introduction in the remaining states to keep container plastic pollution out of streets, bushland and ocean. Victoria and Tasmania have finally come onboard with the rest of Australia announcing its introduction in 2020.
