Cents and Sustainability
www.naturaledgeproject.net
The Purves Environmental Fund is supporting The Natural Edge Project, hosted in-kind by Griffith University and Australian National University, as they produce Cents & Sustainability - a book that deals with the vital issue of how we can decouple economic growth from negative environmental and social pressures. Cents & Sustainability is an initiative to mark the 20 year anniversary of the UN Brundtland Commission's landmark report, Our Common Future and carries a foreword from Dr Gro Brundtland, the former Chair of the World Commission on Environment and Development. The book explores, in a modern global context, the conditions under which society can achieve a form of economic growth that is both socially and environmentally sustainable.
State Library of New South Wales Fellowship in Environment and Conservation
www.sl.nsw.gov.au
The Purves Environmental Fund is supporting the State Library of New South Wales Foundation to develop a twelve-month fellowship to research and understand the Library's extensive collections pertaining to the environment and conservation. The fellowship will help to shape the development of the Library's future online resource, and stimulate fact-based discussion on our environmental past as it relates to current debate. The Library has one of the most comprehensive collections on the Australian environment including human appreciation of, and impact upon, the natural landscape. The Environment and Conservation Fellowship was awarded to Emeritus Professor Derek Anderson in April 2008.
The Purves Environmental Fund supported Nicola Markus to write On Our Watch, a book about the current state of Australia's environment from the perspective of someone who has worked in the research and conservation fields for many years and is passionate about the magnificent diversity of Australia's flora and fauna. The book draws on recent scientific reports, expert opinions and the author's personal experience, to provide an overview of the rise of environmental awareness in Australia in recent decades, of the legislation and conservation frameworks designed to protect Australian species and the barriers that are delaying delivery of significant outcomes. The book is due to be published in February 2009.
Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network
www.aegn.org.au
The Purves Environmental Fund is a sustaining member of the AEGN. The AEGN aims to improve the conservation, protection and functioning of Australia's natural environment and ecological processes through education and networking of grantmakers. The AEGN was incorporated in 2008. The secretariat now produces regular newsletters and organises events to keep grantmakers informed about environmental issues and philanthropy.
WWF Macquarie Island conservation
www.wwf.org.au
The Fund supported WWF to raise awareness of the terrible plight facing Tasmania's World Heritage listed Macquarie Island. The island's unique and fragile ecosystems are under extreme threat from rodents and urgent action is needed to resolve the issues. The Fund's support gave WWF additional communications and organisational capacity to increase the effectiveness of their Macquarie Island public awareness and community education outreach activities. Partly as a result of WWF's efforts, a tremendous outcome was achieved. In early June 2007 the Australian and Tasmanian Governments announced that they had reached an agreement to jointly fund the eradication of rodent pests on Macquarie Island to protect its World Heritage values.
Tarkine National Coalition
www.tarkine.org
The Purves Environmental Fund supported the TNC with a donation to general funds. TNC's objectives are to protect the natural environment of the Northwest of Tasmania and the Tarkine. Previously, the support of WWF and the financial support of the Fund's Chair were both instrumental in the 2004 decision of Government to preserve this wilderness area from forestry operations.
Clean Up Australia
www.cleanup.com.au
The Purves Environmental Fund supported Clean Up Australia's Clean Fuels Campaign. The Fund's support contributed towards development of a website information hub and development and distribution of a clean fuels lesson within the Clean Up Australia Kids Schools Kit. Unfortunately, the Clean Fuels Campaign was not carried through to completion due to a review of priorities at Clean Up.
Australian Wildlife Conservancy
www.awc.org.au
The Purves Environmental Fund supported AWC through membership funding. AWC is dedicated to protecting Australia's biodiversity, including threatened species and ecosystems, through the acquisition and management for conservation of a network of properties around Australia.
